Born in Munich in 1947, Arne Vierlinger recognised his passion for drawing as a young schoolboy and dreamed of becoming an artist one day. "I wanted to make art from an early age, but my father had forbidden it," says Vierlinger. At 18, he left his parental home and travelled the continents to work as a tinsmith, stage painter or even as a lamp hanger.
"Art was always a part of me." This is how the German artist Arne Vierlinger describes his path in life. He gained artistic experience in Munich, Bonn and Frankfurt, where occasional courtesy portraits enabled him to switch to a serious permanent engagement with art. Vierlinger's first exhibitions could be admired as early as the 1990s in the Frankfurt am Main area.
Vierlinger developed his own technique for pencil drawings. One of the impulses was an encounter with John Heartfield's critical collages, one of the reasons for today's pictures is his many years of work in the esoteric field and his interest in Indian culture.
By looking at Vierlinger's twelve-part horoscope pictures (a text and picture series in German language), the medicine wheel symbolically begins to turn: Vierlinger's power pictures convey the myths of the Indians. The symbols of the birth totems are collaged into impressive images that lead into the world of the spiritual clans. The essence of the sign in question is made visible.
In general, the artist takes us into special worlds. His digital spaces – you can't just call it a "picture" – tell stories with open endings or show a cosmos of their own. Works such as "Lone Wolf", "Once Upon a Time" or "Indian" are, in a certain sense, actually walkable. One can lose oneself in contemplation.
Since the mid-1990s, Vierlinger has lived with his wife in a wine-growing community in Baden. Vierlinger uses the fantastically beautiful area as a source of ideas and runs a small studio there. In his small gallery, he offers his works to those interested, from postcard size to large-format paintings.
Years ago, he still painted in oil and watercolour, but now he is more and more occupied with computer-generated collages that not only remind one of works by Salvador Dali or Hieronymus Bosch, but often surpass them in flash of inspiration. Superimposed layers show impressive compositions from the plant and animal world, flowing into each other with buildings and people.
Unlike Heartfield in his time, Vierlinger does not glue photo parts together, but brings together his own and found photo material in drawings with his own pictorial handwriting. To do this, he sometimes uses the legitimate means of a modern overhead projector. However, this is preceded by compositional studies and considerations of how to create a new pictorial statement by setting the contrasts and tonal values. The loose stroke with the soft pencil and the intensifying effect of graphite are the only means with which expressive, sometimes almost photo-realistic pictures are created.
His commissioned works are printed or drawn on high-quality paper or canvas. For Vierlinger, the pencil drawings with their black and white contrasts have the greatest expressiveness. And so he also calls his works power and energy pictures. People are eye animals, in search of new adventures for the mind – and Vierlinger has mastered the power of the drawing stroke like no other.
Art has always been in motion, in development. One could think that Arne Vierlinger has picked up the threads left behind by René Magritte or Dali. Arne Vierlinger has more exhibitions planned. We are looking forward to his new works.
