American author Douglas Phillips is the creator of the popular 'QUANTUM' series, which has been published since 2017 and is set in the fascinating world of particle physics. Phillips writes captivating stories that explore scientific concepts and futuristic themes. He is renowned for his innovative storylines that blend science and fiction.
I took a closer look at the first volume and would now like to report on it.
In his novel 'QUANTUM SPACE', Douglas Phillips describes the dramatic events surrounding the destruction of a Russian Soyuz spacecraft during re-entry over Kazakhstan. Ground controllers lost contact with the spacecraft, and it is believed that all three astronauts on board were killed in the incident.
While the authorities and the military prepare to investigate, confusion grows over the missing radar data and the unclear situation. Then, everyone is faced with the challenge of deciphering a message that may have come from an extraterrestrial source. This raises some thought-provoking questions: How can we communicate with the unknown? What does it mean to understand a language that is not your own?
This fascinating novel can be classified as hard science fiction and adventure. It combines space travel with an in-depth exploration of the understanding between different civilisations. The exciting setting focuses on technological innovations and the human psyche in extreme situations. The novel also encourages reflection on the limits of human communication and the emergence of misunderstandings.
I was drawn into the gripping narrative from the very first page. The descriptions of technologies and scientific concepts are detailed yet accessible. However, more depth and explanation could be provided in some places, as the author clearly has a good sense of how to make complex ideas understandable.
The main characters are well developed and bring an interesting dynamic to the storyline. Daniel approaches the challenges ahead with a mixture of determination and scepticism. Marie brings a fresh perspective and curiosity, while Nala, a technical genius, supports the group with her knowledge of advanced technologies. The dialogue between the characters is lively and highlights their different motivations.
The combination of science, adventure, and human emotion creates an exciting narrative that entertains and provokes thought. This novel is a prime example of modern science fiction, addressing our fascination with the unknown and the challenges of the human condition. The author's strengths lie in his gripping narrative style, interesting characters, and the profound questions he raises.
Advertising: I recommend reading 'Quantum Space (Quantum Series, Book 1)', which was published as a 360-page paperback. Douglas Phillips' hard science fiction is also available as an e-book, audiobook, and audio CD.
This link leads to the complete hard SF series. The titles of the books are as follows: Volume 1: 'Quantum Space'. Volume 2: 'Quantum Void'. Volume 3: 'Quantum Time'. Volume 4: 'Quantum Entangled'. Volume 5: 'Quantum Chaos'.
This book series has also been available in a German translation since 2025. You can read my review in German, too.
